After lunch, exploring the Jingshan Park, Beijing Park and Hutong area
Jingshan Park, also called Coal Hill, you can climb the top of hill to enjoy the whole view of the Forbidden City. It’s worth to climb at a clear day for spectacular views of the Forbidden City and Beijing
The hill inside Jingshan Park has five summits, and on each summit there is a pavilion, built in 1751. In every pavilion, there was originally placed a copper Buddha statue which represented one of the five tastes-sour, bitter, sweet, acrid and salt. It is a pity that they were all lost during the warfare of 1900. Among the five pavilions, the Wanchun Pavilion (Ten Thousand Spring Pavilion), on the middle of the five summits, sits at the hill's central point of the city. It is a perfect place to appreciate the full view of the city. From this pavilion, visitors are able to see the resplendent and magnificent Forbidden City in the south
Beihai Park-This is considered one of the oldest and best-preserved imperial gardens in the downtown area.? Date back 1000 years, it’s has survived the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties and is a perfect example of the ancient Chinese art of garden landscaping. We will leisurely stroll the gardens with plenty of photo opportunities
Beihai Park covers an area of about 175 acres (70 hectares), more than half of which is taken up by the lake. In the middle of the lake and on the central axis of the whole park lies the Jade Flowery Islet, topped by the imposing White Dagoba which is the landmark. Besides the Jade Flowery Islet,it has four main scenic areas: the Eastern Shore Area, the Northern Shore Area, the Botanical Garden and the Circular City near the north gate. There are many famous and beautiful places you should not miss when touring it.
White Pagoda (Baita) : An onion-shaped shrine dagoba in Tebetan style in the center of Jade Island, built to honor the fifth Dalai Lama when he visited Beijing in 1651
Five- Dragon Pavilions (Wulongting) : This area was named after the magical impression of five pavilions linked up by winding bridges. It was a favorite place of imperial families, where they could relax, enjoy a spot of fishing or watch the moon.
Nine - Dragon Screen (Jiulongbi) : One of a trio of similarly designed equally famous walls in China. It is built completely of glazed tiles and actually has 635 carved dragons, an impressive feat of Qing Dynasty craftsmanship. It is 5 meters high and 27 meters long.
Tranquil Mind Study (Jingxinzhai) : On the north shore of the lake, built in 1757 and once a study of Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong, this is Beihai’s crowning glory. Empress Dowager Cixi even had a railway built in front of the building that led to Zhongnanhai
Exit from the north gate of Beihai Park, we will take you to walk around hutong area nearby the Houhai lake
Walk around Old Beijing Hutong : Hutong is a Mongolian word meaning water well. At nine meters (about 30 feet) wide, it is the name given to a lane or small street that originated during the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368). Now they have become representatives of local culture, thus it is the first choice for people who would like to learn about the local history and culture.
Smoking Pipe Oblique Street (Yandai Xiejie) : tucked behind Houhai lake, this is one of the Beijing oldest hutong lanes. It got its name from the many tobacco pipe shops mushrooming with the arrival of the Manchu rulers. With a combination of residential buildings and traditional shopfronts displaying carved windows and selling an assortment of antiques, it’s a quaint and charmingly old-fashioned area
